After a false start in 1999/2000, followed by a period of retrenchment and relative inactivity, the client sought to re-examine the opportunities and threats posed by a gathering “second wave” of online market growth.
The strategy review set out to assess emerging evidence, in the UK and abroad, of the types of services with a demonstrated impact of appealing to news audiences and advertisers, and included an assessment of online classified, content, directory, and community businesses.
Through several phases of analysis and review with client executives, the project resulted in a revised statement of strategic intent for the group online, backed by a commitment to specific targets in priority online segments, and by a detailed strategic plan setting out near and medium term actions.
